The future is being designed today

If you want to be the forerunner in your industry, you can’t afford to stand still. iLOQ’s R&D department has kept busy developing everything from the mechanics of the core of our lock cylinder to new digital tools and applications. And these are only the things we can tell you about at this point.

Innovation is a human trait

Over the past few years, the number of people working in iLOQ’s R&D department has more than doubled. With fresh talent comes fresh perspective. Our innovative staff are what we consider our R&D capital. We want to nurture the talent we have and continue to attract new, hungry innovators into our team. A solid brand and reputation have helped us ensure the highest quality in the recruits we have brought onboard. An inspiring working environment has helped us keep them.

Refining the heart of the lock

One of the key projects that has kept us busy has been the redesign of the core of our S5 DIN-cylinder lock. This new, simpler design was first conceived back in 2018. After several years of development, we have gone from prototypes to a final commercial product. Pilots are already in progress in Central Europe as we speak. With less parts, the new lock promises to be not only more reliable and long-lasting, but also faster and more efficient to manufacture and assemble. It takes innovation and attention to detail to make something so simple, even simpler. That’s why the new design is patent protected on a wide scope.

Not all products are physical

But it is worth noting that R&D at iLOQ does not only revolve around locks and keys. More than 50% of the development taking place revolves around digitalization, software and the efficient utilization of data. On that side, the iLOQ HOME solution was the biggest concerted effort undertaken during 2021. With an easy, intuitive and safe solution that puts more freedom and power into the hands of tenants/end users, we are changing the face of access management as we know it. We are extremely proud of the work that has been done, but, at the same time, acknowledge that this launch was only the first version. Development of the next features you can expect to see in future updates are already under construction.

Ensuring cybersecurity is a must

The general direction that the world is going shows us that digitalization, the integration of solutions and platforms and the open sharing of data will continue to be trends that also drive our R&D efforts. At the same time, it means that privacy and cybersecurity issues will be more and more critical. That is why we take strong measures to ensure the security and integrity of our digital solutions. This includes security audits and even employing white hat hackers as a third party to identify risks and verify the security of our solutions.

Sustainability as a design criterion

And last, but not least, sustainability and environmental responsibility will continue to be an important area of focus for us. This is not just a matter of designing and creating sustainable and responsible solutions to sell to market, but also a matter of continuously analysing and looking at our own processes and making improvements that will ultimately reduce the CO2 footprint of the products we make.

In all the aspects mentioned above – hardware design, software development and sustainability innovations – we are committed to continuing to execute on the highest possible level to ensure our competitive edge today and tomorrow.
