The commercial launch of the iLOQ S50 mobile access management solution was an important milestone for 2018. The new product has been primarily designed for and marketed to the utility industry. The iLOQ S50 is already proving its worth in one of the largest data centers in the Nordics.

Telia Helsinki Data Center

These all-important utility industries often deal with managing vast numbers of sites, personnel and locks in their daily operations. For them a mobile phone-based locking solution that eliminates the risks related to handing over and managing huge numbers of mechanical keys and enables providing targeted access rights in real-time is a true game-changer.

Modern digital solutions for modern data centers

Among our first major contracts iLOQ signed an agreement with Telia – a leading telecom and data network provider in the Nordics. The iLOQ S50 solution was selected to provide security and efficient management of access rights for the company’s largest data center to date.

In June of 2018, the Telia Helsinki Data Center was opened in Pitäjänmäki. It is Finland’s largest open data center and the most modern and safest facility for data in the Nordics. It provides top-level systems for security, safety and power and has multiple connections to Telia’s global network that hosts almost 40 percent of the daily global internet traffic.

The data center has space for nearly 200,000 servers and a capacity of 5,000 racks. Data center racks are steel and electronic frameworks that are designed to house servers, networking devices, cables and other computing equipment.

At Telia, we take security very seriously, and we love mobile solutions.”
Pasi Sutinen, Director, Data center business, Telia Finland

With over 30,000 m2 already available, the equipment space is scalable according to customer needs ranging from a quarter of a data cabinet to an entire customer-specific data hall. It was vital for Telia to choose a locking solution for the cabinets and halls that is equally scalable.

When speaking at iLOQ’s 15-year anniversary event in October, Pasi Sutinen, the Director of Telia’s data center business in Finland, praised iLOQ’s ability to understand and address Telia’s needs. The iLOQ team was able to tailor the solution in accordance with Telia’s special requirements and requests. “This task-based access we now have is an extremely nice system. We have provided many ‘wow’-effects for our customers with this solution.”

Mobile access management reduces security risks and maintenance costs

iLOQ S50 is a secure and fully digital locking solution specially designed for the needs of facilities such as data centers. Utilizing NFC technology, iLOQ S50 runs through a mobile app on a smartphone. It offers the high level of security that Telia demands, together with efficient over-the-air access sharing that eases operating logistics and reduces costs associated with mechanical and battery-powered electronic locks and access control systems.

Telia also, faces the challenge of managing numerous sites, high numbers of personnel and vast amounts of locks. This has traditionally meant that a huge number of keys are in constant circulation. With iLOQ S50, access rights for the racks at the data center can be shared and managed with one user-friendly, secure software program.

iLOQ S50 helps manage access rights to 5,000 locked server racks within the data center.

The security risks related to physical keys have been eliminated. iLOQ S50 has helped Telia keep track of who has access to what with features like time-restricted access, instant granting and revoking of access rights and real-time audit trail reports. Security is underlined with a TLS-protected client-server communications encryption of sensitive data.

Feedback from the field has been positive thus far. Telia is reaping the benefits of both the easy functionality of the iLOQ S50 solution in place, but also the saved money and resources that a digital solution with no mechanical keys brings them. We look forward to continuing our fruitful co-operation with Telia.
